Redact PDF

Black out private details for good, by searching for them or drawing boxes.

Files never leave your device

Redacted pages become images when you save, so the hidden text can't be recovered or copied.

How to redact a PDF

  1. Drop your PDF into the box above.
  2. Search for a word or number and press Mark all matches, or draw boxes over anything you want gone.
  3. Check the list, then press Apply redactions and save.

When you save, every page with a redaction is turned into an image with the marked areas filled in black. The text underneath is removed, not just covered, so it can't be copied, searched or recovered. Text on those pages can't be selected afterwards. Pages without redactions stay exactly as they were, and document details such as title, author and keywords are removed.

Questions

Is the text really gone?

Yes. Redacted pages are rebuilt as images from what's visible, with the black boxes burned in. The original text and anything under the boxes isn't copied into the new file.

Why can't I select text on redacted pages anymore?

Because those pages are now images. That's what makes the redaction permanent. Pages you didn't redact keep their text. To make a redacted page searchable again, run OCR PDF on the result.

Search didn't find my text. Why?

Scanned pages are pictures, so there's no text to search. Draw boxes over the details instead. Always check every page before you share the file.

Is anything else removed?

Yes. The title, author, subject, keywords and other document details are removed, along with bookmarks and attachments.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. PaperSwoop reads your files with your browser and builds the result on your device. You can even turn off your internet after the page loads and it still works.
